Why a rent receipt matters
Under section 13 of the Premises Rent Control Act 1991, a landlord must give a signed receipt immediately for every rent payment and keep the counterfoil. Section 27 allows a fine of up to twice the amount received when no receipt is given. Dhaka North City Corporation's January 2026 guidelines also ask for a written receipt every month and rent paid by the 10th.
For the tenant, the receipt is proof of payment. For the landlord, it is a clean record of income, which also helps at tax return time.
